Paul Scholes appointed manager of League Two's Oldham Athletic

Paul Scholes becomes new manager of League 2 side Oldham United

New Oldham boss Paul Scholes hopes to tap into former club Manchester United to give his first foray into management a boost.

The former Manchester United was formerly a coach at Old Trafford but this is his first permanent manager position.

He is now stepping out of the studio and into the dugout as he prepares to return to his roots having signed an 18-month contract with the club currently sat 14th in England's fourth tier.

There were concerns that his 10% stake in Salford City, the National League club he co-owns, would prevent him from taking charge of the Latics.

This will be the first senior managerial role of Scholes' career with a club he supported as a child.

Speaking about the appointment, Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam told the club's website: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football".

'He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

"It's always been a club fighting relegation as much as other managers have tried to lift it, it's been hard and I'm like every manager who's been here in that time, I want to try and change it". However, following a meeting of the English Football League, the move has been given the go-ahead.

"I couldn't be any happier at the minute", he told Oldham's official website.

The six ex-players are all part owners of Conference Premier side Salford City. I know it wasn't what he thought he was going to do when he was a player, but you know that drug with football, when you don't get it.

Scholes has limited coaching experience, including four matches alongside Ryan Giggs when his former team mate took caretaker charge of United following David Moyes's sacking in 2014.
