New leak shows the final screen design of Galaxy S10

Chipmaker Qualcomm announced its new mobile processor, the Snapdragon 855, which will enable mobile devices to connect to the latest mobile networking standard, 5G.

We think the new handset will be the USA version of the Galaxy S10 - Samsung usually releases two versions of its "S" series handsets; one based on its Exynos chip which comes to most territories including the United Kingdom and another based on Qualcomm's latest platform for the U.S. market.

"5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other people in ways never thought possible", said Brian Higgins, vice president, wireless device and product marketing at Verizon. The only slightly behind South Korea in enabling 5G for consumers, as TechRadar reports that three South Korean operators launched their 5G networks for enterprise consumers in parts of major cities.

Speaking of which, Qualcomm confirmed that Samsung is going to be one of the first companies to release a 5G-ready phone, sometime in the first half of 2019.

Details on the Verizon/Samsung 5G Android-based smartphone launch are light for now. The company states that the new mobile platform features their fourth-generation, multi-core AI Engine with up to 3 times the AI performance compared to the Snapdragon 845.

Verizon already has a working 5G commercial service, 5G home, which was launched in October in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento, with a "rapid expansion" on the cards.

Samsung, meanwhile, figures to play a critical role in 5G, both with smartphones and with networking equipment.

However, 5G won't burst onto the smartphone scene. The potential limitation of 5G could be a reason why it's unlikely we'll see 5G-capable iPhones next year. Katouzian also announced Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor, the world's first commercial ultrasonic fingerprint solution supported under the display. Qualcomm states that them using ultrasound in the 3D Sonic Sensor is more secure and accurate than the alternative.
