Jennifer Lopez Defends Grammys Motown Tribute: "I’m Just Very Humbled"

But one performance stuck out for all the wrong reasons.

Minutes before Sunday's award ceremony (Feb. 10) Variety caught up with Motown and music icon Smokey Robinson and asked him about the backlash over J.Lo's upcoming performance.

Others called out the obvious: why not get someone more closely associated with Motown to perform?

However, any Motown fans were not pleased and wondered why the Academy would honour the legendary record label with Lopez instead of a black artist, particularly during Black History Month.

Besides taking aim at Lopez herself for being chosen to perform, others criticized her wardrobe choices.

"You can't tell people what they can and can't do - what they should sing or not sing", Lopez told "Entertainment Tonight" in a Twitter clip, below. "You can't tell people what to love", she said. "[The Grammys organizers] know how much I have been influenced by that music and so it was a natural fit for them", she noted. "For some people, [it wasn't], and that's okay. You gotta do what's in your heart".

There has been some outrage about Jennifer Lopez being part of the Motown tribute at the Grammys.

Jennifer Lopez and Smokey Robinson perform onstage during the Grammy Awards in LA. "I grew up on all those songs and because my mum loved them so much she passed them onto us".

Robinson also defended Lopez. "I think anyone who is upset is stupid", he said Saturday, adding that Lopez has more than enough credibility as someone "growing up in her Hispanic neighborhood" in the Bronx. "Motown was music for everybody".

The Latin singer-actress hit the Grammys stage on Sunday inserting her energetic dance-pop flavor into memorable Motown melodies such as "Dancing Machine" and "Dancing in the Street".

There will be full Motown tribute show titled "Motown 60: A GRAMMY Celebration." which will be taped February 12 but air April 21 on CBS.
