Google Pixel 4 could come with improved dual-SIM support

Google's Pixel 4 may offer improved dual-SIM functionality, according to an AOSP commit

According to recent commits to AOSP's Gerrit, the Pixel 4 will have dual-SIM functionality.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 phones support Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) technology, which means you can't receive calls or texts on the inactive SIM.

With Apple providing dual SIM support on the latest iPhones in some regions and most Android phones offering the same, it's no surprise to see Google introducing actual dual SIM support on the upcoming Pixel 4.

Internet search giant Google has been reported several times to launch a "Lite" version of its Pixel 3 smartphone series.

If you're a Pixel 2 or Pixel 3 user, you already know that your phone comes with dual SIM support out of the box, but one of those two SIM cards is a virtual one - or eSIM. Finally, there's Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA), where both SIM slots can be used for calls, texts, and data simultaneously. Never mind the fact that eSIM support is very limited in the United States and the rest of the world, the Pixel's Dual SIM mode is one that goes back to the early 2000s. However, the recently filed patent by Google could reveal some information about the next-generation Pixel-branded smartphone. XDA is guessing that the Pixel 4 will support Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS), which is certainly a logical conclusion. Also available in the latest iPhones and many dual SIM Android smartphones, this basically means that the other SIM can receive calls or texts so long as the primary SIM slot isn't actively being used for the same objective.

We're nearly certainly going to get Android Q arriving with the Pixel 4, ready to take advantage of that dual-SIM functionality. The same commit mentions that the Pixel 3 also supports dual-SIM use, but it's restricted to dogfooding. What is likely, however, is that when the improved dual SIM feature is made available, it will be present on the next Android Q OS update, along with the new Google Pixel.
