Breakfast Not Important to Weight Loss

This meant those who ate breakfast experienced no weight loss and people who skipped their morning meal also saw no weight gain, according to the research published Wednesday in the BMJ. The studies were mainly from the United States or the United Kingdom. It showed that people who ate a big breakfast lost two and a half times more weight, compared to those that ate a big dinner.

Lead author Dr Daniela Jakubowicz, from Tel Aviv University, said: 'The hour of the day - when you eat and how frequently you eat - is more important than what you eat and how many calories you eat.

It said eating breakfast regularly could have other important effects, such as improved concentration and attentiveness levels in children.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is important for overall wellbeing and for avoiding certain illnesses - but weight isn't the only marker of good health, and shouldn't be your only consideration when it comes to making decisions about food. (0.44 kilograms) more at the end of the study period (seven weeks, on average) than people who skipped breakfast.

The researchers wrote: "This study suggests that the addition of breakfast might not be a good strategy for weight loss regardless of established breakfast habit". "However there is no evidence that we should be encouraging people to change their eat pattern to include breakfast in order to prevent weight gain or obesity".

Prof Cicuttini explains that the focus should be not placed on when we eat our largest meal of the day - whether it's at lunch or breakfast - but on total daily calorie content.

Prof Cicuttini tells SBS the researchers also conducted sub-analyses, eliminating data from the Japanese study to see if a person's culture impacted the relationship between breakfast consumption, weight and metabolism. "In fact, research shows that people who regularly eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight".

Do you eat a hearty breakfast in the morning and then skip a few meals thinking it will help you lose weight? Some people like breakfast and some don't. People who always eat breakfast shouldn't be discouraged from doing so, she said.

And, despite common belief, skipping breakfast was not linked to people feeling hungrier in the afternoon or to differences in energy expenditure.

Dana Hunnes, a senior dietitian at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, who was not involved in the review, said that its conclusions don't appear strong enough to warrant recommending for or against skipping breakfast.

Researchers failed to find any significant different in metabolic rates among breakfast eaters and skippers.

More research is needed into the impact of breakfast on metabolism and weight.

Eating breakfast won't make you slim if you're knocking back a bowl of sugar disguised as cereal, or a full English (which can tally at 800-1000 calories, far above the 200-400 in a serving of cereal).

"There's nothing protective about having a pastry, just because you eat it in the morning", she says.

Coe, who was not involved in the research, added that a healthy breakfast is "just one part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle".

"For people trying to lose weight, the key to success is finding something that works for them and that they can stick to", she said.
