"We thank the relevant authorities and community as a whole who were involved in bringing the baby girl to safety".

Rescue teams secure a trench in order to reach a newborn baby that was presumably dumped down a stormwater drain in Newlands East on Monday.

"Durban fire department has been down the manhole and has visuals of the actual baby quite far down the pipe".

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said emergency services were on the scene in Newlands East on the corner of Barracuda Road and Herring Way.

Cllr De Boer said some residents told her that they heard the baby crying as early as 1am and thought it was cats mating.

He said she was transported to Albert Luthuli Hospital via the AMS Medical Helicopter.

She's been airlifted to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Rescue workers worked for three hours to save the baby girl, who had been washed five metres down a drain pipe.

'Police will now be trying to investigate the circumstances that led to the baby being in the drain in the first place and will also be trying to trace the mother, ' he said.

Some 3,500 babies are abandoned a year and the social services will take over now and allocate the baby to a nursery and then try and find parents who wish to adopt.
