Another potent winter storm arrives Monday

Mid-Michigan will be on the edge of a rain-snow line, which could bring a mix of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain blown around by winds gusting to 40 miles per hour.

Word of the friendly battle spread on social media on Friday night and Saturday, as a winter storm that blanketed Washington state with snow moved south into Oregon.

The snow will come in three waves beginning Sunday evening, followed by systems coming to the region Monday night and Thursday night.

In Washington, the National Weather Service told people to anticipate steady snowfall from Sunday afternoon in the Olympic Peninsula, spreading into the Puget Sound area by evening.

The Midwest and Northeast will only have a little break between snow events. In the central part of the state, snow drifts blocked roads and forced the closure of US 2 and Interstate 90, in addition to causing multiple vehicle crashes.

An expansive winter storm will take shape across the northern Plains on Monday afternoon, according to AccuWeather Storm Warning Meteorologist Billy Clark.

"Snow conditions are worsening minute to minute, so don't expect travel conditions to improve", the Grant County, Wash., sheriff's office wrote.

Snow began falling north of Seattle with some areas recording 8 inches (20 centimeters) of snow before it made its way south and enveloped the city.

In addition to snow-packed, slippery roadways, blowing and drifting snow can create whiteout conditions as winds strengthen around the storm.

After two days of cold, mostly sunny weather with highs near 33 degrees, Tuesday is expected to bring a winter storm, according to the National Weather Service.

It looks like students could be in for more snow days this week.

"I love it. I'm excited about it", she said of the snow.

Meanwhile, enough rain may fall to aggravate the flooding situation from Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, to the southern portions of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Then comes the more significant storm on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
