Amazon reportedly reconsidering NY location amid growing resistance movement

New York Is Having Second Thoughts About Amazon’s Second Headquarters

The source said the state also has been reaching out to NY officials with suggestions of sharing the project, as was previously reported in ROI-NJ.

According to the Washington Post, Amazon may be reconsidering its decision to open its long-touted HQ2 to the borough of Queens in New York City.

To that end, Amazon has been issuing statements to media outlets telling them that the company has no plans to remove themselves from the deal and said "Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be".

One supporter of the deal Van Bramer spoke to "seemed genuinely anxious, and that led me to believe that it was real", he said.

Amazon can see its grasp on $2.808 billion in subsidies slipping away.

"Chicago has a lot to offer, and Mayor Emanuel will continue his efforts to recruit companies to Chicago until his last day on the 5th Floor in City Hall, and probably for long after that", the mayor's office said in statement that was careful not to mention Amazon. "Defeating an anti-union company is a victory". "This is getting the business community very anxious about the future of NY". Each project in NY and Virginia is expected to create 25,000 jobs. Such uproar has stood in contrast with the company's reception in Virginia, which has been largely friendly.

While all of that is happening, Amazon floated this pullback from NY, citing how "welcoming" politicians in Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee have been in handing over public money for its site locations.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not at liberty to discuss the plans publicly, the people said Amazon executives have had discussions inside the company to reassess the situation in NY and explore other locales.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo framed the original announcement as a tremendous job creation opportunity for the entire New York region.

But a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said the governor misrepresented her position.

Cuomo's office then released a copy of legislation introduced on February 5 by Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris (D-Queens) that would allow New York City - not Albany - to impose a tax surcharge on city wealthy residents to help fund mass transit improvements and provide reduced fares for low-income New Yorkers.

Gianaris, Van Bramer, and others have also criticized Amazon's anti-union track record, and maligned the billions of dollars in incentives and tax breaks for the tech giant included in the deal.

Amazon has not yet returned a request for comment from Fox News, but it did tell TechCrunch it is "focused on engaging with our new neighbors - small business owners, educators, and community leaders".

The Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon.
