Tulsi Gabbard announces she will run for president in 2020

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) has settled speculation about her political ambitions with her announcement that she'll run for president in the 2020 election.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision", Gabbard told CNN. "There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", Gabbard added.

Gabbard was elected to Congress in 2012 and now serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Gabbard said "the issue of war and peace" would be the main focus of her campaign. "Look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement".

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, she told CNN in an interview.

Gabbard has earned her right to be critical of those conflicts. Though Gabbard has been aligned with Trump over some aspects of Middle East policy ― including whether the US should provide support for Syrian militias fighting Assad ― she recently called Trump "Saudi Arabia's bitch" for his failure to react to the Saudi killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event", President Trump said of the killing.

It is unclear whether Gabbard will get much traction among the establishment Democrats, who she has frequently disagreed with on foreign policy issues. Gabbard supported legislation that made it more hard for Syrian refugees to enter the U.S. She says she no longer holds those views on the issue. "We must end all USA support for Saudi Arabia's genocidal war in Yemen now".

Gabbard became the first Hindu member of Congress when she was elected to the U.S. House in 2012.

Gabbard was also criticized for being one of the only Democrats to meet with President Donald Trump after he was elected. So if you were thinking Gabbard was looking for a VP slot on the Kamala Harris ticket, that's probably out now.

The US senator Elizabeth Warren, of MA, on 31 December announced she had formed an exploratory committee for a presidential run in what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election.

Gabbard is so far left that she lost the support of a Hawaii teacher's union over her handling of Syria. "Liberals think she's too conservative, conservatives think she's too liberal, and just about everyone thinks her coziness with Bashar al-Assad is disturbing", said Ahrens.
