This Year's Super Bowl Music Act Is A Safe, Expected Choice

Maroon 5

It's official: As Variety reported back in September, Maroon 5 will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta on February 3, and the group will be joined by rapper Travis Scott and former Outkast member Big Boi. It showed concert footage of the group and included scenes with rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi, who will appear as special guests during the high-profile performance.

A second source involved in the conversations also told ET that the NFL actually approached both Rihanna and Pink - who sang the National Anthem ahead of Super Bowl LII back in February - to perform at halftime early on, but because the negotiations took so long, both women made a decision to move on.

"I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in".

The Super Bowl tends to draw the biggest (and least controversial) names in pop, so enlisting Maroon 5, which has earned 14 top 10 hits on the Billboard 100 and sold more than 50 million albums, makes sense for the most-watched show of the year. However, he again stirred some controversy when he performed Minnesota-native Prince's "I Would Die 4 U" with a giant projection of the late artist on a large sheet behind the stage. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the National Football League on this important donation. Until the league changes their policy and supports players' constitutional right to protest, no artists should agree to work with the NFL.

Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan told Vibe magazine in December he hoped Travis Scott, also rumoured as a performer at the time, wouldn't participate for the same reason.

Timberlake was eventually forgiven - though not Jackson, who reportedly drew the ire of former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves - and was the headliner a year ago from Minneapolis.
