The Academy Awards Will Air with No Host This Year

Kevin Hart

The 2019 Academy Awards are still set for February 24, but the Academy apparently didn't have a backup plan if comedian Kevin Hart didn't come back to take the hosting duties after the offer was extended.

As Variety reports, the ceremony will be kicked off by "one marquee name" who will deliver "a monologue filled with Trump zingers".

Kevin Hart says he won't be hosting the Academy Awards. "I'm just done. If you didn't [hear the apology], then I don't know what you're looking for".

The comedian, 39, struck a defensive tone on on Good Morning America Wednesday morning, emphasizing that he was "done" discussing the topic. Variety goes on to note that, barring some last-minute change in plans by the Academy in which a superstar host gets secured after all, next month's return of the yearly awards ceremony is going to feel instead a little like a variety show.

The last time the evening had no host was during the 61st Academy Awards in March 1989, which began with a widely mocked musical number starring Rob Lowe and Snow White.

DeGeneres encouraged Hart to reconsider taking up the hosting gig and even admitted she called the Academy to make a plea on his behalf to convince them to give him a second chance.

The debacle continued when Ellen DeGeneres invited the Night School star to do an interview on her talk show.

"You will not hear me say anything else about it", he insisted during his GMA interview. In that, you go, f*ck!

It's official: Kevin Hart will not host this year's Oscars. You've done it. Don't let those people win.

"I'm over it", he told Strahan. I'm not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old when I've moved on and I'm in a completely different space in my life. You should host the Oscars. Some things are left out of your hands. "Steve Martin should host the Oscars!".

Hollywood superstar Chris Rock isn't coming to the Academy Awards' rescue.

"I have an understanding that I've addressed it and I've said everything that I can possibly say".

According to Variety, the idea right now is to have celebrities starring in little skits around the running time, with a focus on the music in the movies.
