Senate Democrats Block Syria Sanctions Over Shutdown

US Senator Bernie Sanders

Senate Democrats blocked action on a bill unrelated to the ongoing government shutdown Tuesday, in protest of President Donald Trump's demands to fund a controversial border wall with Mexico in exchange for reopening the agencies.

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey says taxpayers rely on the IRS to assist them in filing taxes and financial planning but now "don't have anyone they can turn to" for answers.

Now, the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate is attempting to do something much larger than mere block-to-block fighting-the very first bill of the new session, loaded with symbolic significance and sponsored by Marco Rubio (and supported by many Democrats), has nothing to do with improving the lives of ordinary Americans. Although conservative allies of the president are urging him to declare a national emergency to build his proposed border wall with military funding, he isn't expected to do that in his remarks.

Eight Republicans including Reps.

The legislation, introduced by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, consolidates four bills that did not make it through Congress a year ago.

At the moment, the bill has the necessary 60 votes because of the seven Democratic co-sponsors and the support of minority "leader" Chuck Schumer.

Opponents say Rubio's measure infringes on free speech. Sen.

Democrats and President Trump are launching an aggressive public relations campaign in hopes of winning popular support as the 18-day partial government shutdown drags on with no resolution in sight. They also hope to win a critical political victory in the showdown over Trump's demand to build a wall on the US border with Mexico. Dianne Feinstein's office pointed me to a statement on her website that reiterated her "strong support for Israel" and described Rubio's bill as unconstitutional.

She has since said that her comment might have been a "distraction", but she believes in calling for the impeachment. "Let's get our priorities right", the senator continued.

"I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier?"

Leaving aside these two representatives' real views, which I oppose, it's unsafe for democracy if officials blatantly lie to their constituents about issues that can change votes.

"Tonight, President Trump reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the humanitarian and security crisis at our nation's southern border", he said. Some Republican senators gathered with Jared Kushner Wednesday afternoon to try to hammer out a broader immigration and border security deal that could appeal to Democrats, but no Democrats were present. "Or maybe they're just making it up as they go along".

"The Senate will not take up any proposal that does not have a real chance of passing this chamber and getting a presidential signature", he said.

Democrats held a series of press conferences around the Capitol flanked by furloughed federal workers, blaming the president for upending the lives of hundreds of thousands of them and even more contractors.

"A lot of them agree with what I'm doing", he said.
