Seattle Mariners acquire prospect Shed Long from Yankees

Sonny Gray has managed only a 15-16 record since being traded to the Yankees in 2017.

Cincinnati and NY agreed to a deal Friday, pending a window for Gray to reach a long-term deal. Gray is set to be a free agent after next season and the Reds want starters who they'd have under team control for multiple years.

In joining the Reds until 2022, he will be reunited with pitching coach Derek Johnson, who coached for Vanderbilt during Gray's time there from 2009-'11. In addition to Long, who was promptly traded from NY to Seattle, the Reds also sent a competitive balance draft pick to the Yankees. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman publicly stated his intention to deal the former All-Star after the team's season ended with an American League Division Series loss, and though it took more than three months, he found a willing partner in the Reds, who have remade their roster via trade this winter.

I think negotiating an extension with a player is always hard, but maybe the Reds have reason to be confident here because of the connection with his old pitching coach.

In return for Gray, the Yankees would acquire 2B Shed Long, the Reds 7th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline along with a draft pick and possibly another lower-tier minor leaguer.

The Sonny Gray era is officially over in NY. Other recent additions include Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Tanner Roark, and Alex Wood. He had been eligible for free agency after this season, and his new deal raises his guarantee to $38 million over four seasons.

So Long was a Yankee for probably all of about 20 seconds before they flipped him to Seattle for Stowers.

Gray is 59-52 with a 3.66 ERA in six seasons with the Athletics and Yankees.

Jerry Dipoto must've felt left out. Gray got off to an underwhelming start with NY, going 4-7 in 11 starts in 2017.

Long, 23, hit.261 with 12 home runs and 19 stolen bases in Double-A previous year.

Stowers, 21, was Seattle's second-round pick out of Louisville in last summer's draft and slashed.260/.380/.410 with five homers and 20 stolen bases in 58 minor league games past year.

Long was drafted as a catcher in the 12th round out of Jacksonville High School in Alabama in 2013. He pitched mostly at Class A but made one start for Double-A Trenton.
