Samsung Ditches Plastic Product Packaging Materials

Samsung Electronics vows to use more environmentally sustainable packaging, including bioplastics and paper

First of, it will replace the plastic holder trays - which layer the phone, instructions, and accessories within the outer box - with a pulp mold instead.

Under the company's circular economy policy, Samsung has set a mid-term implementation plan to only use paper packaging materials certified by forestry initiatives by next year.

Additionally, the packaging material used now for Samsung's products and accessories - ranging from mobile phones and tablets to home appliances - will be substituted with environmentally sustainable materials like recycled/bio-based plastics and paper. Instead of plastic, Samsung will start using paper and and other environmentally sustainable elements. The company is even going so far as to redesign the housing of its chargers, swapping to a matte finish and thus doing away with the plastic film traditionally used to protect the glossy finish in transit.

Samsung is changing the phone charger design as well.

In instances where plastic is necessary, the company will use a substitute.

Samsung says it has established a task force dedicated to ideating and executing on its goals for greater sustainability. The design and development, purchasing, marketing and quality control departments will put their heads together to come up with innovative packaging ideas.

Samsung Electronics will stop using plastic packaging in its products and accessories, including home appliances. For example, the plastic bags used to wrap TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines, among other appliances, will be updated. These materials are made from plastic wastes and non-fossil fuel materials such as starch or sugar cane, respectively.

The company said it will start using sustainable materials for packaging starting this year.

The company pledged in its statement that it will use 500,000 tons of recycled plastics and will collect 7.5 tons of discarded products by 2030.

Samsung's new paper strategy means using environmentally friendly materials for its packaging and manuals.
