Foods including whole-grain pita bread, fresh fruit, salads, nuts, beans, olive oil, and salmon are staples of 2019's top diet and promote a variety of health benefits.
"You really want something to be a lifestyle change so that you can handle it if you have kids or you live alone and I think this one really checks all those boxes", registered dietitian Amy Peick says.
Once again in the top spot is the Mediterranean diet for 2019.
This is the second year in a row the U.S. World News Report chose Mediterranean as the best diet of the year. It also ranked No. 1 in a few category rankings, including best heart-healthy diet and best plant-based diet.
This plant-heavy diet focuses on adding five food groups - "new meat", fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and sugar and spices - to your diet, instead of taking foods away.
