Rajasthan: Baby split in half, head left in womb during delivery

Nurse in Rajasthan's Ramgarh decapitates newborn during delivery, leaving head inside womb; police yet to...

The carelessness and the insensitivity shown by the accused male nurse and his colleague endangered the life of the mother, who is said to be fighting for her life in the hospital.

On January 6, pregnant Dikhsha Kanwar was admitted to the government-run Ramgarh Community Health Centre, in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district, when she began having contractions.

The nurse deposited the baby's body in the mortuary.

A case has been opened against two male nurses but police are yet to arrest them.

The Rajasthan health minister Raghu Sharma ordered an inquiry into the shocking incident in which the nursing staff of a health centre in Jaisalmer pulled out a baby with brutal force, severing its head, on Thursday.

During the delivery a male nurse pulled at the foetus so hard that it broke into two parts, it was reported.

The man in charge of the heath centre in Ramgargh, Dr Nikhil Sharma, said he wasn't present at the time of the incident.

Gynecologist Ravindra Sankhla said he was told the baby was delivered and just the placenta remained in the womb.

A nurse pulled out the newborn with vast force during the delivery, the parents alleged.

After she was transferred, doctors performed the operation during which they found the baby's head in the womb and informed the woman's family.

After the incident, they asked family members to take the woman to Jaisalmer claiming that the opening of the womb had closed and it was hard to take the umbilical cord out. Chief medical health officer, Jaisalmer, Dr B L Bunkar said, "I visited Ramgarh and investigated the matter".

The woman's relatives were informed and her husband filed a complaint against the Ramgarh hospital staff.

Mr Bhati alleged that the nurses at the Ramgarh centre were drunk.
