Police in the U.S. state of Utah have taken the unusual step of urging residents not to drive blindfolded after an online challenge inspired by a horror film led to a crash.

Additional interviews later revealed that the teen was attempting the viral media challenge inspired by Netflix's hit December flick, Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, in which characters must cover their eyes to prevent themselves from going mad and killing themselves.

Last week Netflix warned fans not to attempt the challenge.

Police said they didn't learn about the story behind Monday's crash until Friday.

Lt. Travis Lyman, Layton Police, said the 17-year-old girl driving the pickup truck was with a 16-year-old boy when she made a decision to attempt the "Bird Box Challenge" and used a beanie as an impromptu blindfold. "We shouldn't have to say this, but we're gonna: Don't drive blindfolded". The Layton Police Department reported no injuries were associated with the crash.

She tries to guide her children - referred to as Boy and Girl - to safety along a treacherous river and through a dense forest, all without being able to see.

The end of the world must be close thanks to the Netflix hit "Bird Box".

The film, however, has since inspired the #BirdBoxChallenge, which features people trying to do daily - and sometimes harmful - tasks while their eyes are covered.

No one was hurt in the Monday crash north of Salt Lake City.
