Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell is in the NCAA's transfer portal, which allows other programs to communicate with him to explore future options and could mean his departure from the Buckeyes. But then Ohio State lured Georgia transfer Justin Fields to compete for the starting spot. And while entering the transfer portal doesn't guarantee a transfer, given Martell's comments prior to Fields' transfer, his intentions seem clear.
He had this to say before the Rose Bowl regarding a potential Fields transfer.
"If someone thinks they're going to walk in and start, it's probably not going to happen, just from having to learn the offense", Martell said, wearing a backward cap and a scarlet hoodie as he met with reporters in a tent outside the stadium. That tweet no longer exists.
The dual-threat quarterback now joins a crowded quarterback transfer market which will also include Alabama's Jalen Hurts. Fields as applied for a waiver to play immediately, and the Toledo Blade reported that a decision from the NCAA could be made as early as February. A Gatorade Football Player of the Year, Martell was 45-0 as the Gaels starter, capturing three straight state titles while passing and running for 7,510 yards and 113 touchdowns, second most in Nevada history.
