Oakland A's Desperately Trying To Dissuade Kyler Murray From Entering NFL Draft

A's are scrambling for last-ditch Kyler Murray plea

The A's allowed him to return to the University of Oklahoma, where he put up historic numbers at quarterback and won the Heisman. They are not allowed to sign amateur players to minor league deals, then immediately give them major league deals, because the latter would be an inducement to sign and a circumvention of the league's finite draft pools.

Murray, agent Scott Boras and A's reps all met together in Dallas on Sunday to explore a potential deal, according to Slusser. Murray is expected to declare for the National Football League draft before the Monday deadline, though doing so in no way would preclude him from agreeing to a new deal with the A's.

A contingent led by Oakland A's team president Billy Beane will meet with Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray on Sunday in hopes of getting him to skip the 2019 National Football League draft, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Oakland would have to add Murray to its 40-man roster if he signed a major-league contract.

According to multiple reports, Murray is asking for a significant increase in guaranteed money from Oakland - as he should, given he has incredible leverage right now - although the number is in flux. The A's reportedly are expecting Murray to enter the draft, hence the meeting.

If Murray picks football, he will have to forfeit his almost $5 million signing bonus from Oakland.

We should know more about Murray's final decision soon. The A's don't want their prized first-round draft pick hurt on the football field because they are counting on him wearing an Oakland jersey come spring training.

It shows how desperate both the league and the A's are to keep Murray as a baseball player. A report last week said the Athletics believe he will declare for the draft Sunday.
