Multimillion-dollar ‘Farming Simulator’ franchise enters world of esports

We have lots of eSports enthusiasts in our company who can't wait to show the world that farming can indeed be fun and competitive at the same time.

This year's league will take place in Farming Simulator 19 with a new 3v3 mode, although it isn't clear what the details are, besides moving on from competitive bale stacking. No word yet on what this is going to look like, though a championship held a year ago showed competitors stacking hay bales.

As insane as it sounds, with the right commentary team and some competitive players, there could be a hook to Farming Simulator League.

The Farming Simulator League will roll out a total of 10 tournaments across Europe, with events staged at Gamescom in Germany and Paris Games Week. With €250K ($284K USD) up for grabs, it's a significant leap beyond the smaller Farming Simulator Championship events of the past, the largest of which had a prize pool of €3K ($3.4K).

In a welcome sign of synergy with the people who play and love its game, Giants Software envisioned the league after noticing grassroots competitions involving its game.

Farming Simulator will shed out €250. As seen in the photo below, the regular-sized booth was packed wall-to-wall with viewers to watch the three-player bale-stacking battles.

As much as we kid, it turns out that competitive e-farming is a bigger draw that one might think.

"It was a very hard process, but we had a bit of time to work on the process and see which partners we could work with on the sponsor side, the stage construction side, and on the overall management of a full-fledged league", Ammann explained.

While sponsors for the League include the usual suspects like Intel and Logitech, Giants Software wants teams themselves to be backed by actual farm-tech manufacturers. We'll share them with you as we learn them. "We already worked with them for a couple of years on a special gear that is made for the game".

Aside from big-money investment, The Farming Simulator League has undergone a slight change in structure, too. Farming simulators like Stardew Valley are lovely, relaxing social games where you actually grow crops and mine for gems.

Since the franchise was first released in 2008, the game has earned quite a following among the simulator community.
