Mitch McConnell Blocks Government Spending Bill And Blames Democrats for the Shutdown

House Democrats plan to hold votes this week on legislation this week that would reopen the government into February, but Republicans are rejecting those bills out of hand.

"We're going to be open for any federal family that needs food".

But only 2 percent said that speech swayed them while 89 percent did not change their minds about building a border wall, the Quinnipiac University poll found.

A group of Republican lawmakers who met with President Donald Trump says it's time for Democrats to come the negotiating table to end the partial government shutdown now in its fourth week.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) talks to journalists following a meeting with President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and fellow members of Congress about border security at the White House in Washington on January 2, 2019.

"They are not employees of Trump Tower", Rep. Ayanna Pressley said of McConnell and Republican senators. Todd Young listen at the U.S. Capitol after the weekly Republican Senate policy luncheon.

Federal officials says the most common trafficking technique is to hide drugs in vehicles coming into the US though land entry ports, where the vehicles are stopped and subject to inspection. McConnell made it clear that senators would be required to work throughout their scheduled recess unless both parties can compromise and find a way to fund the government.

Some lawmakers are reluctant to return home for next week's planned recess - some were planning their first town halls of the new year - as the standoff deepens.

The partial shutdown is the longest in United States history and its effects have begun to reverberate across the country. The funding will be distributed through the Red Cross to those who need it.

The almost 50,000 furloughed federal employees are being sent back to work without pay - part of a group of about 800,000 federal workers who aren't receiving pay during the shutdown, which affects dozens of federal agencies large and small.

McConnell Monday mockingly questioned whether Pelosi should now introduce legislation to tear down existing border walls and fencing.

"There is definitely a sense that there is a deadline approaching, which would be next Tuesday, to make sure that we're able to solve this problem", said Mercedes Schlapp, a White House spokeswoman.

House Democrats announced they would cancel their district work period next week and have lawmakers remain in Washington amid the shutdown stalemate. They have insisted the government be fully open before negotiations occur.

Congressional Democrats have refused to attend a working lunch at the White House to discuss ending the government shutdown, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a press release on Tuesday.

The US economy is taking a larger-than-expected hit from the partial government shutdown, White House estimates showed, as contractors and even the Coast Guard go without pay and talks to end the impasse seemed stalled.

Rep. Jim Himes of CT, another centrist Democrat, said the White House is "grasping at straws".

The longest such shutdown in US history dragged into its 25th day with neither US President Donald Trump nor Democratic congressional leaders showing signs of bending on the topic that triggered it - funding for a wall Trump promised to build along the border with Mexico. Pelosi's office said she would respond later on Monday.

The White House later named five Democrats who received invitations: Reps. He cited Pelosi's joke earlier this month that she might give Trump $1 for his border wall. "He just walked out of the meeting".

House Democratic leaders said they did not tell members to boycott Trump's lunch but had pressed those invited to consider whether the talks would be merely a photo-op for Trump. Nine House Republicans - none of whom are involved in party leadership - attended the private lunch.

The outreach was a shift for the White House as the shutdown is now in its 25th day, with no resolution in sight.

Trump proudly served stacks of burgers from McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King, fries, Domino's pizza, and some salads to the national champions and their coach on Monday when they visited the White House.

The White House has been considering reaching out to rank-and-file Democrats rather than dealing with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to try and chip away at Democratic opposition.
