Microsoft Says Windows 7 Activation Bug Was Caused By Server Update

New Windows Update Will Give Your DAW More Plug-ins

"Local users who are part of the local "Administrators" group may not be able to remotely access shares on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 machines after installing the January 8th, 2019 security updates", Microsoft said. With new languages installed on the device, Windows will adjust the amount of reserved storage to make sure these new languages are properly installed in your system.

A tweak to the Activation Servers saw happily licensed Windows 7 users suddenly presented with "Windows is not genuine"-type notifications from 10:00 UTC on January 8, surprising BOFHs already dealing with loss of folder sharing for some users thanks to the January update". Combining Jiminy with the Key Management Service (KMS) on Windows 7, as many enterprise customers likely do (even though Microsoft wishes they wouldn't), hasn't caused too many headaches. As announced earlier, Microsoft will now reserve 7 GB of storage for Windows Update, temporary files, and system cache.

This reservation of storage is going to happen automatically, both on new devices that come with Windows version 1903 preinstalled, and existing ones where 1903 is clean installed.

More importantly, as we see ever more powerful CPU and increased memory and storage this will mean that Windows 10 will let us take advantage of that capacity.

Microsoft's decision to earmark several gigabytes for future updates and temporary files should make things go smoother, in some cases. They can then reduce the Reserved Storage space by deleting any of these unwanted optional applications, Microsoft's announcement suggested.

Microsoft's new storage policy may have been aimed at ensuring there are fewer instances of failed updates.

Just how much space Windows 10 sets aside varies quite a bit from one computer to another.

"When it's time for an update, the temporary unneeded OS files in the reserved storage will be deleted and update will use the full reserve area", Microsoft's announcement explained.
