Rumors were abound that Alabama co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Josh Gattis would leave the program, but the rumored destination was that he would join former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Mike Locksley in College Park, Maryland.

In Tuscaloosa this past season, Gattis was the club's co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach, and helped mentor one of the top receiving crews in college football, led by Biletnikoff Award victor Jerry Jeudy (68 catches, 1,315 yards, 14 touchdowns).

Gattis will join the Wolverines after MI went without an offensive coordinator in 2018. "This is the leadership challenge I've coveted". He had been wide receivers coach under James Franklin since 2014. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh previously said assistant head coach Pep Hamilton was calling plays late in the season.

Gattis helped Alabama reach the College Football Playoff National Championship Game and mentored All-American receiver Jerry Jeudy, the 2018 Biletnikoff Award victor, who caught 68 passes for 1,315 yards (19.3 avg.) and 14 touchdowns.

Then, apparently, Jim Harbaugh swooped in.

Gattis also helped develop true freshman Jaylen Waddle, who earned first-team All-American honors by Pro Football Focus.

Before spending 2018 in Tuscaloosa, Gattis helped Penn State sign four straight top-25 recruiting classes and was named the 2015 Big Ten Recruiter of the Year by Scout.com.

Gattis takes over an offense that features a former five-star under center in Shea Patterson and a wealth of offensive talent, including receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins, Tarik Black and Ronnie Bell and a potential big-play threat in tight end Nick Eubanks. In addition to the hire of Gattis, defensive line coach Greg Mattison and defensive assistant Al Washington both departed for Ohio State earlier this week.

Gattis was formerly a safety who played for Wake Forest before getting drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. McElwain is now the head coach at Central Michigan. They haven't finished better than No. 50 in total offense in any of Harbaugh's four seasons.

Alabama, like MI, was long known for a run-heavy offense but recently evolved to a more modern approach with quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa.
