McCarthy: Russia Investigation Has Been About Trump 'From the Beginning'

Chris Coons (D-DE) commented on a New York Times report that the FBI opened an investigation into President Donald Trump after he fired FBI Director James Comey.

Trump was responding to a Washington Post report, which said he went to great lengths to hide details of his discussions with Putin.

Ron Johnson (R-WI) about reports that President Donald Trump was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for possibly being a Kremlin agent, only to have the senator launch a diatribe attacking Democrats and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was Central Intelligence Agency director at the time the investigation was launched, declined to comment on the New York Times report, but insisted in an interview with CBS that "the notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous".

"I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked", Trump responded. "I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written, and if you read the article you see that they found absolutely nothing". And the investigation was whether you were actively working for Russian Federation or unwittingly.

I can tell you this, if you ask the folks in Russian Federation, I've been tougher on Russian Federation than anybody else, any other - probably any other president period, but certainly the last three or four presidents, modern day presidents.

A White House spokesman told the Post that the Trump administration has looked to "improve the relationship with Russia" after the Obama administration "pursued a flawed "reset" policy that sought engagement for the sake of engagement".

"I've not seen any evidence of collusion between the Trump Campaign and Russia", Johnson exclaimed.

On Sunday, Cruz told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the media's focus on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's campaign to disrupt the 2016 USA presidential election is just another example of the disconnect between most of the nation and its capital. The inquiry reportedly sought to get to the bottom of whether Trump was hindering the safety of the nation and whether he was obstructing justice with the ouster, given that there is an ongoing probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

Then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson attended Mr. Trump's first official meeting with Putin, but the two presidents also spoke for up to an hour at dinner, a conversation the White House did not acknowledge for almost two weeks.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has defended the decision, saying the companies are undergoing a major restructuring to "sever Deripaska's control and significantly diminish his ownership". He says Deripaska himself and any companies he controls remain under sanctions.

On this weekend's broadcast of "Fox News Sunday", Sen.

Cruz said the people he meets in the Lone Star State are far more concerned about their job opportunities, lower taxes, higher wages and border security than Russian interference or the investigation. Deripaska has figured into the investigation due to his ties to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
