Matt Kuchar Highlights | Round 3 | Sony Open 2019

Matt Kuchar of the United States plays his shot from the fifth tee during the second round of the Sony Open In Hawaii at Waialae Country Club on 11 January 2019 in Honolulu Hawaii

Leishman started the day seven shots off the lead but three birdies on the front nine have him tied for third at 14 under par, three behind the new leader Andrew Putnam.

Kuchar became the first multiple victor on the PGA Tour this season, having ended a drought of more than four years when he captured the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last November.

"To shoot 7 under back-to-back is unexpected, but awfully excited", Kuchar said with the same smile he wears for most any occasion. "So pleased with my game".

The easygoing vibe in Hawaii is a flawless fit for Matt Kuchar, who spends as much as a month at a time on the islands when his schedule allows. Tree-lined Waialae is one of the tightest courses on Tour and a place where accuracy still counts for something, unlike many of today's bomber-friendly layouts.

Kuchar ended a three-year drought by winning the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last fall. He is 2-2 in his career when leading going into the final round.

Australia's Marc Leishman finished in a four-way tie for third place at 17 under with Canada's Corey Conners and Americans Hudson Swafford and Chez Reavie.

"Didn't feel as easy as the first two days", Putnam said.

Regular caddie John Wood was back on the bag in Hawaii for the duo's first victory since they began working together in late 2015. He has made only one bogey through 54 holes, and he only came seriously close to one on Saturday, saving par from the bunker on the par-3 17th. There were no signs of jitters down the stretch en route to his 100th career top-10 finish on Tour.

"It was so uncharacteristic of me", Kuchar said, referring to his three-putt and bad wedge on No. 5. Reavie didn't think all that much about it until he piped a drive on No. 8 and hit a wedge that covered the flag. Along with his runner-up finish in the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall, he has almost as many FedEx Cup points as past year when he finished at No. 130.

He'll be very comfortable over the next few weeks, remaining in Hawaii with his family for a two-week vacation.

Peter Jung, who qualified by winning an amateur tournament, played in his first PGA Tour event.

"Andrew was tough. He was battling me, took the lead.it was nice to have that pressure, to have come through and to make some birdies coming in".
