Kuchar two ahead in Hawaii in bid for ninth PGA Tour win

Kuchar will aim for his second championship in about two months after winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic in November in Mexico.

Main storyline heading into Sunday: Since 2011, five players have opened a PGA Tour event with consecutive rounds of 63 or better.

Chez Reavie (66) - who had five birdies through nine holes - fell into a two-way tie for third place (14 under) with Keith Mitchell (63).

The lead stayed with Matt Kuchar, who kept another clean card and shot a four-under 66 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sony Open, as he goes for his second victory this season on the PGA Tour.

After back-to-back 63s, the American produced a flawless round on day three, firing four birdies to move to 18 under overall and top of the pack after 54 holes.

"To shoot 7 under back-to-back is unexpected, but awfully excited", Kuchar said with the same smile he wears for most any occasion. Needing to birdie the last four holes to qualify for the weekend, he ran off two birdies, missed a 3m birdie putt and then narrowly missed chipping in for eagle.

"Last year I probably ground harder than I've done in the past", he said.

Five-time PGA Tour victor Hideki Matsuyama is 10 shots off the lead, tied for 35th, after also shooting a 3-under 67.

Kuchar has won just twice in the dozen times he has held the 36-hole lead, but he feels with the way he is playing that he can add to his birdie count. Reavie made more eagles - three - than birdies, of which he had only one. "I didn't find myself in any trouble". But, Kuchar closed out the front nine with two birdies in the pair's last three holes. (68) and Marc Leishman (68) are also in the bunch at 11-under. He has been to five of the islands, and plans to stay another few weeks after the Sony Open.

Clearly, the 40-year-old is in a better spot than when he had gone more than three years without winning and was left off the Ryder Cup team for the first time in 10 years.
