"This is in addition to the 1,500 who left the company during 2018", Tata Motors said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

JLR also revealed that electric drive units will be produced at the i54 engine factory in Wolverhampton as it increases its investment in electrification.

JLR's figures were also dented by the introduction of European emissions standards known as WLTP, which resulted in a fall in demand for diesel cars.

The job cuts are a part of the GBP 2.5 billion cost reduction and cashflow improvement efforts that the company is now undertaking, for over 18 months period.

The BBC has reported that management, marketing and administrative roles are expected to be affected along with a number of production staff.

The firm, owned by Indian conglomerate Tata, booked a £90 million pre-tax loss in the three months to September 30, which compared with a £385 million profit in the same period in 2017. But sales in China have fallen almost 50% in recent months as cautious Chinese consumers have been holding back on big ticket purchases amid global trade tensions.

The company said in July a year ago that it needed more certainty around Brexit in order to continue investing in its United Kingdom operation. JLR said it regularly reviewed "its production schedules to ensure market demand is balanced globally".

He said: "We will invest in the vehicles, services, segments and markets that best support a long-term sustainably profitable business, creating value for all our stakeholders and delivering emotive vehicles to our customers".

"This is not about making the business today more efficient but completely redesigning it", Ford's European president Steve Armstrong told the FT.

Ford is now in talks with Volkswagen Group over a potential alliance, which could boost its strategic cost-cutting and boost its efforts to deliver an alternatively-fulled vehicle (AFV) drivetrain for each of its auto models.

Britain's business minister Greg Clark said on Thursday it is clear why a no-deal Brexit would add to the problems with further costs and disruption.

At the time, it did not say how many jobs would be lost, although the Financial Times reported in December up to 5,000 jobs could go. Separately, Ford has warned that more than 7,000 engine and gearbox manufacturing and development jobs are under threat after the American company said it is shaking up its European operations.

"We expect the immediate impact on Ford's United Kingdom operations to be limited".

The automaker said it would start off by offering voluntary redundancies to United Kingdom workers.

They said in response: It is, of course, bad news that Jaguar Land Rover is being forced to make further job cuts.
