Huawei launches 'highest-performance' ARM-based CPU

Huawei launches ARM-based Kunpeng 920 chipset, takes on x86 server chips from Intel, AMD

Also Monday, Huawei unveiled three servers based on the new chip that are intended for global sale.

The Kunpeng 920 uses the cutting-edge 7nm process and was independently designed by Huawei based on the ARMv8 architecture licence.

Huawei Technologies Co. unveiled a new processor chip for servers as the Chinese telecommunications gear giant pushes ahead with expansion despite closer scrutiny from overseas.

Redfox Qiu, President, Intelligent Computing Business, Huawei, was quoted saying that the company has efficiently shipped around 900,000 units of servers in 2018, compared to its 77,000 exports in 2012 when it started. Single-slot speed is "twice that of the incumbent offering", Huawei said, improving the performance of storage and various accelerators. Huawei is maintaining an open and collaborative stance to encourage an open ecosystem in the industry for the advancement of the ARM-industry and is all too ready to come together with the big players in the said industry for the sole objective of achieving new heights in the field of computing. Together we have contributed to the development of the ICT industry. TaiShan will deliver 20% higher computing performance and much lower power consumption for enterprises.

"At typical frequency, the SPECint Benchmark of the Kunpeng 920 CPU scores over 930, which is 25% higher than the industry benchmark", the company said.

"Huawei has continuously innovated in the computing domain in order to create customer value".

"Intel will remain our most important strategic partner", insisted Xu, further claiming that the Kungpeng 920 would "definitely not [be] a replacement for Intel processors".

Huawei on Monday also released its TaiShan series of servers powered by the new chipset, built for big data, distributed storage and ARM native applications. "We hope to make our cloud service, together with our partners, one of the top five cloud services in the world", said William Xu, Director of the Board and Chief Strategy Marketing Officer of Huawei. "We're working very closely with ARM to get the optimizations done on the gcc front, and the ARM compiler", which will increase performance as these optimizations produce more efficient binaries. The company works with such organizations as the Green Computing Consortium (GCC), Linaro, and Open Edge and HPC Initiative (OEHI) in cooperation with Hortonworks, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, SUSE, Ubuntu, and China Standard Software. Combining multiple computing architectures for optimal performance becomes a must. "With products and services (e.g., Huawei Cloud) designed based on Ascend 310, Huawei enables inclusive AI for industries", William Xu noted.
