Phil Masinga

Bafana Bafana legend Philemon "Chippa" Masinga has passed away.

South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan joined the football world in remembering and mourning Masinga.

The club announced his passing on social media on Sunday morning, saying: "It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of former striker Phil Masinga's passing".

Masinga was also part of South Africa's golden generation of footballers who plied their trade overseas for many years.

Masinga made his debut for South Africa in July 1992 against Cameroon in his country's first match following readmission to global football by Fifa after the end of Apartheid.

He was signed for Leeds by then manager Howard Wilkinson at the same time as his compatriot Lucas Radebe.

The lanky forward netted against Congo Brazzaville at the FNB Stadium, a goal which ensured the South Africans booked their ticket to the 1998 Fifa World Cup, which was staged in France.

Masinga was admitted to hospital in December where he was said to be suffering from an "undisclosed illness".

In 328 professional appearances, the striker scored 154 goals. The thoughts of everyone at #LUFC are with his family and friends'.
