China moon rover 'Jade Rabbit' wakes from 'nap'

China's lunar rover Yutu-2 or Jade Rabbit 2 rolling onto the far side of the moon taken by the Chang'e-4 lunar probe is seen in this image provided by China National Space Administrati

This handout picture taken by the Chang'e-4 probe and released to AFP by China National Space Administration on January 3, 2019 shows an image of the "dark side" of the moon.

Researchers hope that low-frequency observations of the cosmos from the far side of the moon, where radio signals from Earth are blocked, will help scientists learn more about the early days of the solar system and birth of the universe's first stars. It has successfully rolled out onto the surface, becoming the first robot to ever be on the Moon's far side.

Several new pictures shown on state broadcaster CCTV revealed the Jade Rabbit 2 rover and the Chang'e 4 spacecraft that transported it to the Moon.

Chang'e 4 made the historic touchdown on the moon's surface on 3 January and used its terrain camera to take 360-degree shots of the Von Kármán crater where it had landed, Vice's Motherboard reported.

The moon's surface on this side is thicker and more pitted than the familiar earth facing side.

At 4:47 p.m. BJT on Friday, the images of the lander and the rover appeared on a large screen at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center, showing the Chinese national flag on both the lander and the rover with the desolate landscape dotted with craters on the far side of the moon as the background.

China's lunar rover got back to work on the far side of the moon Thursday after waking from a five-day hibernation, its official social media page announced.

"The information from the depths of the Moon will be one of our focuses in the exploration", Li said.

The Chinese space administration also released a 12-minute video of the spacecraft's landing, which can be seen below.

"The thicker dust shows that the lunar regolith in the region has undergone longer space weathering, which also gives strong evidence of the region being older".

Wu Weiren, CLEP's chief designer, added that "it was a great challenge with the short time, high difficulty and risks".

"The far side of the moon has very unique features, and has never been explored on site, so Chang'e-4 might bring us breakthrough findings", said Zou Yongliao, director of the lunar and deep space exploration division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
