Backed Syrian Forces Have ISIS in Its 'Final Moments'

Pompeo 'optimistic' Syria Kurds, Turkey can be protected

Earlier this week, an administration official told CNN that the first United States military ground equipment has been withdrawn from the war-torn country.

Trump also threatened to "devastate Turkey economically" if the country hit the Kurds living in Syria.

But, he added, "we also know that those fighting alongside of us for all this time deserve to be protected as well".

No U.S. personnel have left Syria yet, according to a Pentagon spokesman.

Turkey on Saturday welcomed the latest statement made by Washington's top diplomat over Ankara's right to defend itself from "terrorists" after the USA withdraws from Syria. "We will continue to fight against them all".

Pompeo's remarks came after U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said that as a precondition for the U.S.' withdrawal, the protection of YPG terrorists must be assured, which drew ire from Turkish politicians, including top government officials.

Islamic State militants are "living their final moments" in the last enclave they hold in Syria, near the Iraqi border, where the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces have stepped up their attacks in the last two days, an SDF official told Reuters on Sunday.

A US-led coalition of over 70 member-nations has been conducting military operations against the Daesh terror group in Syria and Iraq. -Turkish consultations as part of the "deliberate and coordinated" withdrawal of American forces from Syria.

Last month, Trump announced that he wanted USA troops out of Syria - a decision that resulted in the resignations of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIS.

However, Bolton later said that the U.S.' withdrawal would be subject to defeating Daesh remnants, and Turkey assuring the safety of fighters allied with the USA, i.e. the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is dominated by the YPG.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is now in the Saudi capital Riyadh as he tours the Middle East to reassure US allies in the region.

The bilateral relations have been further aggravated by U.S. threats to halt the transfer of military tech to its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, including the fifth generation F-35 stealth fighter jets, and even to impose sanctions over Turkey's commitment to purchase Russian S-400 air defense systems, a diversification of weapons suppliers that enhances its national security.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called Bolton's remarks unacceptable, saying Turkey could not accept the U.S.' condition of protecting YPG terrorists, the Syrian affiliate of the PKK.

"We will protect Kurds and other Syrians against all terrorist threats".
