Apple plans to launch three new iPhone models this year

So there is a lot riding on this year's range of iPhones, which is now expected to include three devices including a follow-up to the relatively affordable iPhone XR.

Apple Inc plans to launch three new iPhone models this year, including one with an LCD screen, to succeed its struggling XR model, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Sony last month said it was ramping up production of next-gen 3D sensors for mobile cameras after having received interest from manufacturing partners.

Finally, the name of the new iPhone is still a mystery, because after the iPhone Xs, Apple could choose to continue with the Roman numeration (iPhone XI), return to the numbers (iPhone 11) or completely change its name.

Apple, like other handset makers, has been grappling with the reality that consumers aren't upgrading their phones as often as they once did.

The new devices will be expected by shareholders to reverse the disappointing sales that led Apple to cut its sales outlook for the first time in nearly two decades on lower-than-anticipated demand in China and elsewhere.

This sounds familiar, but the newest features may come in the phones' cameras.

Its XR-inspired model will probably stick with the LED screen from its current range, whilst the others will use OLED screens. The WSJ news confirms the presence of the three cameras, that according to the newspaper will be one of the key characteristics of the iPhone of 2019.

Two major Chinese retailers have slashed prices on Apple Inc.'s latest iPhones, an unusual move that underscores how demand for the marquee device is flagging in the world's largest smartphone market.

"Since we began shipping the iPhone XR", Cook said, "it has been the most popular iPhone every day, every single day, from-when we started shipping, until now". The report suggests that Apple may remove 3D Touch from all iPhones. It's possible that Haptic Touch will extend to all iPhone models if Apple gets rid of 3D Touch entirely.
