Amazon Reportedly Developing Cloud-Based Video Game Streaming Service

Amazon has serious ambitious to do more around video games, with a plan to expand in a big way its existing identity as a retailer of titles as well as the owner of Twitch, the most prominent game livestreaming service in the world.

The e-commerce giant is looking to build an online gaming service. Amazon would contract major game publishers to host their titles on powerful Amazon servers.

Perlman founded OnLive in 2007, in which he sold assets to Sony in 2015 just a year after Sony announced its game streaming service, PlayStation Now. The game streaming service will take on Google and Microsoft's respective game streaming services. Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the most profitable businesses being run by Amazon, is the leader in providing cloud services to individuals and organizations. That could all be changing soon and according to a new report from the Information, Amazon hopes to ride the cloud-gaming wave alongside its close competitors at Google and Microsoft.

The plans for Amazon's service are in the early stages, with sources saying to The Information that the service isn't expected to arrive until 2020. Microsoft confirmed the existence of its formerly-rumored Project xCloud in October, which will bring game streaming to any device, including smartphones.

As Netflix did with TV shows and movies, and Spotify did with music, a gaming platform could offer customers a wider universe of content through a monthly subscription, while giving game studios a steady revenue stream and a broader pool of potential customers.

The first rumors about Amazon's streaming service for games emerged on the Internet thanks to some job ads that point, in no hidden way, to the future video game streaming platform of Amazon.

While game streaming potentially opens gaming up to new people, it's also exclusionary. Amazon Prime members could also get a discount for the service.

Amazon has yet to officially confirm the reports.
