4th flu death of the season occurs in Indiana

Here's How Many People Have Caught the Flu So Far This Season (Hint: It's a Lot)

Southern Saskatchewan is seeing an outbreak of H1N1, with this season's flu strain proving deadly.

Last season, an estimated 49 million Americans got sick from the flu, 23 million went for medical care and 960,000 were hospitalized.

Confirming the details, Dr Farooq Jan Medical Superintendent SKIMS said that so far nine people have died due to H1N1 since September at the only tertiary care hospital.

Thirty states have reported widespread flu activity, although flu is present in every state.

The number of confirmed cases within the region remains high. That's four fewer states than the previous week. Three children's deaths related to the flu were reported in the week ending January 5, bringing the pediatric death toll to 16 for this season, according to the CDC.

Nationwide, there have been 1,562 lab-confirmed cases of flu since October 1, 2018, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Ministry of Health said that people who want the flu vaccine can get in touch with their public health offices.

Pregnant women who get a flu shot protect not only themselves, but also their developing baby, health officials report. "Healthcare workers - you'll be surprised to know how hard it is to convince them, who are on the front line, to accept the vaccine".

Some doctors and nurses were anxious going into this flu season, considering how bad past year was, said Dr. James Steinberg, chief medical officer at Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta.

"And that's why we're putting this message out today, " Dr. Goodison said.

One candidate from the Israel-based biopharmaceutical company BiondVax is in large-scale trials in Europe and smaller trials in the United States. Further, the flu season is still ongoing, so the severity indicators are still expected to rise.

There's even a possibility it might not work.

Flu is among the top 10 leading causes of death in Canada, Gesell said, but there are other respiratory illnesses that the flu vaccine cannot protect against, but covering coughs, washing hands, eating healthily and staying home when sick can help reduce their spread.
