100 million devices sold with its Alexa smart assistant built

Amazon confirms Alexa device sales numbers, and it’s a lot

Both Apple and Google have been trying to get people to buy their smart home speakers, but Amazon has sold way more devices in this category.

Unlike previously suggested, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa won't natively run on Samsung TVs, but devices supporting them will soon gain some sort of integration, which will allow them to work in tandem with the company's smart TV lineup. The number was revealed in an interview by The Verge with Amazon's SVP of devices and services Dave Limp.

While not all the devices included in the 100 million figure are made by Amazon, it does emphasise the public's trust in the company's AI voice assistant, Alexa. You can freely download the Google Assistant app on iOS, which helps, but on Android the Assistant comes built into the main Google app. The User will be able to execute commands from Alexa or Google Assistant but the built-in voice helper will be Bixby. In December 2017, Google also started rolling out Assistant to Android tablets and to phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop, a four-year-old operating system that still makes up 18% of Android device usage. However, Alexa now works on more than 150 different third-party products and the company is not afraid of experimentation with other startups as well. That simply implies a device is capable of using the Assistant, not that it is actively used on such a device.

That number, which includes smartphones, Google Home speakers, and other gadgets equipped with the assistant, is up from 500 million devices last May. At least on that front, Google is the clear victor, with support for 30 languages in 80 countries, while Alexa now supports just five languages. Amazon still has nearly three times the smart home support of Google, as it recently announced 28,000 Alexa-compatible smart home devices from 4,500 different manufacturers.
