Woman gives birth using womb transplanted from dead donor

Infertility affects one in seven people in Britain, and while some problems can be solved through IVF, most women with womb issues have no alternative but adoption or surrogacy.

It was then transplanted to the woman who was given medication to weaken her immune system so her body would not reject the uterus.

"It enables use of a much wider potential donor population, applies lower costs and avoids live donors' surgical risks".

Singer stressed that pregnancies involving transplanted uteruses from deceased donors have failed in the past, but the Brazilian case is "an exciting step in the right direction".

However, he cautioned: "Uterine transplantation is a novel technique and should be regarded as experimental".

The transplant operation in Sao Paulo in September 2016 involved connecting the donor's organ to the woman's veins and arteries, ligiments and birth canal, Nine News reports.

The transplanted uterus was removed during the caesarean section and showed no anomalies.

"In an expanding field such as uterus transplantation, the role of collaborative networks and societies such as the International Society of Uterus Transplantation or new interest groups in already existing scientific societies will be crucial".

She added that the outcomes and effects of womb donations from live and deceased donors have yet to be compared.

In the USA, around 10 percent of women aged between 15 to 44 struggle with fertility, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Baylor has had two successful births from live donations; Cleveland Clinic is working toward deceased donations; and her own program will be performing both living and deceased donor transplants over the next year.

"There are still lots of things we don't understand about pregnancies, like how embryos implant", said Cesar Diaz, who co-authored an accompanying commentary in the journal. The baby girl was born via caesarean section on December 15, 2017, at 35 weeks of gestation.

Ejzenberg stressed that it's rare that living women are willing and eligible to donate a uterus to a family member or close friend.

According to reports, the success of this procedure means that there will be a larger option of donors available for those who have trouble conceiving because of uterine factor infertility.

The first successful live uterus transplant took place in Sweden, in 2014, prompting a rise in uterus transplant programs across the world, wrote the authors of the case study. It is estimated that one woman out of 500 would be the victim of an abnormality of the uterus into the world. After seven months, doctors implanted an embryo made using in-vitro fertilization to spur the pregnancy. Today, the girl and the mother are in excellent health, according to the hospital of São Paulo.

In 2011 a team in Turkey was the first to transplant a uterus from a deceased donor, but the procedure did not lead to a live birth.

The baby, weighing 2,550 grams at birth, remains healthy and develops normally 7 months after birth. For future procedures he hopes to cut down on the time to transplant by removing the uterus before other organs, like the heart and kidneys.

In this study, recently deceased women who had given consent for organ transplant were screened based on previous ability to give birth, blood type, and a lack of any history of sexual disease.
