White House chief of staff John Kelly expected to resign within days

White House advisers believe that chief of staff John Kelly could depart at any moment and that President Donald Trump may replace him with the vice president's top aide, Nick Ayers.

"John Kelly could resign in the coming days", she says, warning West Wing employees are bracing for "a pretty big staff shakeup" if and when he leaves.

As CNN noted, the fact of Kelly's late entry to the White House - he joined in July 2017 - shows the expansive nature of the investigation. It is true that there is little chemistry remaining between the two men, the people said - even though Trump only months ago asked Kelly to stay on through 2020, and the general agreed. McGahn had refused to publicly deny the reporting.

Kelly is expected to be replaced with Nick Ayers, who is now chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence.

Kelly, a decorated Marine Corps general, is widely regarded as one of the most well-respected and qualified members of the Trump administration.

CNN reports Kelly and President Donald Trump have reached a stalemate in their relationship and it is no longer seen as tenable by either party.

Kelly was not at work Friday morning, though an ally said he was simply taking a day off and would be at the White House for a holiday staff dinner Friday night. Kelly's shifting accounts caused his credibility inside the West Wing to plummet, and it never truly recovered, according to officials.

Trump is further expected to announce Heather Nauert as the new USA ambassador to the United Nations on Friday, replacing Nikki Haley. Rumors of Kelly's departure have been circulating since last month's midterm elections.

Kelly has seen his status as chief of staff diminished in recent months, with the President circumventing numerous policies and protocols the retired Marine Corps general put in place when he entered the West Wing a year ago. But this past summer, Kelly sought to quiet speculation that he was nearing the exit because of tensions with Trump by telling senior staff that he meant to remain as chief of staff through Trump's 2020 reelection campaign.

Trump often vacillated between criticizing and praising Kelly, sometimes within minutes of each other.

It is unclear who the replacement would be.

The report, based on three sources, said the questions narrowly focused on President Trump's possible obstruction issues that Mueller is said to be investigating.

Barr is likely to face tough questions at his confirmation hearing about how he will handle the ongoing special counsel investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation to influence the 2016 presidential election.
