As the nation mourned the death of former president George H.W. Bush over the weekend, his beloved service dog was by his side to the end. He died Friday at his Houston home at age 94, and his body is heading to Washington for a state funeral.

The train will take about 2½ hours to travel roughly 70 miles (113 kilometers) to the city of College Station, home to Bush's presidential library at Texas A&M University. "Now we've got a serial liar and womanizer as president, a draft dodger surrounded by a bunch of corrupt crocodiles". "They're both products of their time, and certainly President Bush, who I personally love, was a product of a much kinder, gentler time".

When a woman suggested Bush was out of touch with regular people, he checked his watch and then fumbled through an answer. A funeral service will also be held at the Washington National Cathedral before Bush will be flown back to Texas to be buried. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to attend.

His longtime spokesman, Jim McGrath, said Bush, the last president to serve in combat as a pilot during World War II, will wear socks paying tribute to his military service.

Trump declared a national day of mourning for Wednesday and ordered all executive offices and government agencies to close for the day.

Former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will also attend the funeral.

During their time in the White House, the presidential pets were Millie, a springer spaniel, and later one of Millie's puppies, named Ranger.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is expected to deliver a eulogy at the funeral. His body will be transported by motorcade to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where he and his wife regularly worshipped.
