Scala gives Skoda a fresh start in the competitive small-car segment

Skoda Rapid replacement revealed the 2019 Scala

Czech automaker, Skoda has officially revealed the new-generation Scala hatchback. The new Skoda Scala will compete with the VW Golf and the Ford Focus upon launch.

The Scala is the first auto in the VW Group to get the latest version of the technology, which offers over-the-air updates, live traffic-based navigation and accident-activated emergency calling. "We're convinced that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A segment for Skoda".

Measuring 4362mm long, 1793mm wide, 1471mm tall, and riding on a 2649mm wheelbase, the Scala is larger in every way than the Rapid it replaces.

On the tech front, the new Skoda Scala offers LED headlights and taillights as standard, the Virtual Cockpit setup wrapped around a 10.25-inch display and infotainment systems with screen sizes ranging from 6.5 inches to 9.2 inches. It also offers claimed class-leading boot space with a figure of 467 litres rising to 1,410 - compared to 380 and 1,270 for the Golf. The hatchback combines an emotive design with a high level of functionality as well as state-of-the-art connectivity, and transfers the sensational design language of the VISION RS concept study into a production vehicle for the first time.

Globally, the Skoda Scala hatchback will be made available with multiple engine options - two 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol units generating 99hp/ 115hp and 150hp, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol and a 115hp, 1.6-litre diesel.

He added: "The Scala will help Skoda to change from a volume manufacturer to a global player".

For everything bar the base engine, a six-speed manual is standard. The meaning of Scala in Latin is a ladder and the company chose to use it to represent the improvements in the new model compared to its predecessor.

Other features also include Skoda's typical umbrella compartment, an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap and the optional electric tailgate, which includes top-to-close function.

VW-Skoda future cars for India will be based on the MQB-AO-IN platform and Skoda has already announced that they will bring at least 2 new cars every year in India from 2020.

Visually, the new Scala can sit on 15- or 16-inch steel wheels, but high-spec models get aero-optimised 16- to 18-inch wheels. There will be three petrol options starting with a 95PS 1.0 TSI, a 115PS version of the same motor and going up to a 1.5 TSI with 150PS. Finally, customers can go for a 90PS (89hp) 1.0-liter G-Tec unit that runs on natural gas (CNG).

The optional Sport Chassis Control package has 15mm lower suspension, firmer shocks, and two driving modes (Normal and Sport).

The Scala comes with lots of features like wireless charging, remote door unlocking with Skoda app, keyless, adaptive cruise control, rear-view camera, automatic park assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and more.
