Redsox Re-sign Playoff Hero Eovaldi 4-year, $67.5 million

Reports: Eovaldi re-signing with Red Sox

The team is reportedly cornering the market for free-agent right-hander Nathan Eovaldi.

Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, Eovaldi also pitched for the Miami Marlins before beginning his tour of the American League East with the New York Yankees, Rays and Red Sox.

In the clubhouse after the loss, his Red Sox teammates gave him a standing ovation in appreciation of his effort.

Eovaldi had Tommy John surgery in 2007 when he was a junior in high school and his second in August 2016 while with the Yankees. He started and came in relief situations at times and now he's being rewarded for his heroics. The hard-throwing righty kept the NY bats at bay, allowing just one run over seven innings in a series-changing 17-1 win in Game 3 of the ALDS. Fancred's Jon Heyman backs up Murray's report, adding that he heard the current asking price is four years at $17 million per year. After all, out of those 140 pitchers, Eovaldi was just middle of the pack - 67th - in strikeout rate. In a sense, front offices now have to construct two different teams: one that can win a division over the long 162-game season and one that can win the postseason. The Red Sox are hoping that Eovaldi can maintain the level of performance he showed after coming over from Tampa Bay ahead of last year's trade deadline.

Either way you slice it, the Red Sox signed a pitcher, who would be the one or two in many rotations, to be their fourth or fifth starter and he's still in his prime under a pretty decent contract. The Yankees and Dodgers, swimming in a huge revenue stream just like the Red Sox, remained under the cap in 2018.

The Yankees now sit at about $164 million.
