Rap star Kendrick Lamar, women nominees lead Grammy race

Can 2019 Grammy Award nominations avoid last year's #GrammysSoMale criticisms

The nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards were announced on Friday morning.

Demi Lovato, who relapsed after six years of sobriety and was hospitalized for an overdose in July, earned a nomination for best pop duo/group performance for "Fall In Line", her duet with Christina Aguilera.

Rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar lead this year's nominations in the biggest four categories, which generally refer to record of the year, song of the year, album of the year and best new artist. Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "All The Stars" scored a Best Song Written For Visual Media nomination.

Hip-hop and pop dominated the album of the year nominations, while rock failed to garner even one mention.

Drake, a Grammy veteran, also sits at the top of the list with seven nominations for his 2018 album, Scorpion. Cardi B - "Girls Like You" Justin Timberlake ft. Lamar received eight nominations, while Drake received seven.

Six of the eight 2019 nominees for Best New Artist are women.

The release of Lil Wayne's album "Tha Carter V" was "highly anticipated" by his fans, Rolling Stone reported, as the album took years to make.

Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up" and Shawn Mendes' "In My Blood" earned song of the year nods, while Post Malone's "Rockstar" and Cardi B's "I Like It", featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, round out the nominees for record of the year. While she's having a more hard week than Lamar after announcing her separation from husband Offset, hopefully the Grammy news will continue to lift her spirits.

Taylor Swift and Kanye West were among the artists who were snubbed.

The album of the year race also includes Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy, Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer, Kacey Musgraves's Golden Hour, Brandi Carlile's By the Way, I Forgive You and Post Malone's Beerbongs & Bentleys.

The Carters did get nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance and Best Music Video.

The other rap categories have a wide range of choices as well. Jay-Z has voiced his discontent with the Recording Academy before. The Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS.

Then in June, it announced an expansion from five to eight of the 2019 nominee fields for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. And "Liquid Melancholy: Clarinet Music of James M. Stephenson" - an album by CSO assistant principal clarinet John Bruce Yeh - was nominated for best engineered album, classical (engineered by Bill Maylone and Mary Mazurek).
