North Korea’s foreign minister aims to shore up support from Beijing

North Korean sends top diplomat to key ally China

Trump on Sunday had said he planned to hold a second summit with Kim that could take place in January or February and three places were being considered for the meeting.

According to CNN, Pyongyang has upgraded the Yeongjeo-dong missile base in North Korea´s mountainous interior and has built up another facility that had not previously been publicly identified.

Citing new satellite images obtained by CNN, Jeffrey Lewis and David Schmerler of California's Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey say the site featuring possible missile shelters is the ideal spot to "house long-range missiles", as its location "backed up against the Chinese border" reduces the risk of preemptive strikes from the US.

Despite that site being known to the USA intelligence community, images show in the past year, North Korea has significantly expanded to a nearby base. "Moreover, in the past year North Korea has significantly expanded a nearby facility that appears to be another missile base", the report said, adding that it was not known if the bases were separate or if one was subordinate to the other.

The images indicate that North Korea was building an extremely large underground facility in 2017 and that this facility was still under construction as of August 2018.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing for his three-day trip to the South Korean capital later this month; making a historic visit to Seoul to discuss the complete denuclearization of the region.

"We watch North Korea very closely".

He suggested the meeting could happen in January or February and that the U.S. could continue to enforce the economic sanctions it imposed on North Korea over its weapons program. "We will not discuss matters of intelligence".

"Those missiles are being deployed at bases throughout North Korea, many of which have always been known to outside analysts", the report stated.

USA president Donald Trump said after the summit that Chinese president Xi Jinping had agreed to work with him on North Korea, amplifying Pyongyang's concerns over the summit's implications for China's North Korea policy, including Chinese support for an easing of United Nations sanctions.

"They have not lived up to the commitments so far", Bolton said at The Wall Street Journal's annual CEO Council conference in Washington. "North Korea has a big job to do".

But National Security Adviser John Bolton said Tuesday that there should be another summit with Kim. "Beijing thinks the summit has [provided momentum] to reverse the deterioration of its relations with Washington, so Beijing is willing to do more to consolidate the results", he said.

One such facility is the missile base near Yeongjeo-dong, a site that has long concerned US and South Korean officials and the subject of the analysis of the new images released Wednesday.
