Neo-Nazi Convicted of Murder for Running over Charlottesville Protester

Neo-nazi guilty of murder over Charlottesville riots

Prosecutors claimed that Fields drove his auto directly into them at the "Unite the Right" rally.

The jury deliberated several hours before handing down its verdict, according to this report by National Public Radio. He was also convicted of five counts of aggravated malicious wounding, three counts of malicious wounding, and one hit and run charge.

James Alex Fields Jr., (2nd L with shield) is seen attending the "Unite the Right" rally in Emancipation Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12, 2017.

Heyer, a paralegal and civil rights activist, was killed.

While the fact Fields had struck the protesters in his Dodge Challenger was not contested, his lawyers and prosecutors had offered contrasting narratives over his state of mind and intentions that day.

On Thursday, she urged the jury to find Fields guilty of "no more than" the lesser charges of manslaughter in Heyer's death and unlawful wounding for the injuries to others.

The prosecution called multiple witnesses and victims who recounted in some cases what turned out to be life-altering injuries. Now, she finds it hard to walk unassisted.

James Alex Fields Jr. was found guilty of killing Heather Heyer during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia previous year.

Lunsford dismissed the significance of the Hitler photo and Fields' Instagram post and asked the jury to ignore how they felt about Field's political views when deciding whether to convict him. She also made reference to a text message that he sent a day before the rally. On Aug. 11, 2017, the day before the rally, she told him to be careful and he responded "We're not the one [sic] who need to be careful", along with a picture of Adolf Hitler.

A jury of seven women and five men began deliberating Friday morning and took just over seven hours to reach its decision that James Alex Fields Jr., 21, of Maumee, Ohio, acted with premeditation when he backed up his 2010 Dodge Challenger and then roared it down a narrow downtown street crowded with counter protesters, slamming into them and another auto.

They said he had become angry after witnessing violent clashes between far-right and opposing demonstrators. "We just don't", she said.

Among the witnesses they called was Dwayne Dixon, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor.

The country watched in dismay on August 12, 2017 as right-wing demonstrators - including white supremacists and neo-Nazis upset in part over the the city of Charlottesville's plan to remove a Confederate monument - and counterprotesters clashed. A group of counter-demonstrators caused flare ups between the groups, and eventually the fatal ramming of the auto into the crowd.

Among other evidence in the case, jurors saw Fields, of Maumee, Ohio, marching and chanting with white nationalists, a meme Fields had posted months earlier of a vehicle plowing into a crowd, and a text message he sent his mother the day before the auto attack that included a photo of Adolf Hitler.
