MLB Rumors: Jean Segura trade to Phillies likely coming soon

Phillies, Mariners Nearing Deal Centered Around Jean Segura

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed in principal to acquire Segura for shortstop J.P. Crawford.

Segura, 28-years old, hit.304 last season with an.755 OPS, knocking in 63 runs on 10 home runs, 29 doubles and 178 total hits.

For the past few weeks the Phillies and their future could not be discussed without mentioning Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

Along with his defensive skills, Segura has proven to be a valuable hitter as well, so if Philadelphia fans weren't excited about the shortstop before, they better get on board the hype train since this could turn out to be one of the most underrated moves of the offseason.

Even with Santana's sizable salary, the Mariners shed a ton of financial obligation in the trade - and that's with Seattle reportedly paying Segura $1 million to waive his no-trade clause. Defensively, Segura has appeared in 763 career games at shortstop and 142 games at second base. Segura brings a high-contact rate, low K% and solid on-base percentage while bolstering a position for the Phillies that statistically rated among the.

The Mariners would likely receive J.P. Crawford in return. At one time rated a top-five prospect in baseball by both MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus, the 16 overall pick in 2013 by the Phillies has played just 72 games in the majors but hasn't impressed. He is a significant upgrade for the team and a big splash in the off-season for General Manager Matt Klentak. Last season, the Long Beach, California native only played in 49 games and hit a pedestrian.214/.319/.393 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 138 plate appearances.

While the deal immediately improves Philadelphia's roster, what does it mean for the Phillies in relation to the Harper and Machado sweepstakes? He is signed through 2022, making a club-friendly $14.25 million each of the next four seasons, with a $17 million club option for '23.
