Microsoft's Going to Rebuild Edge With Google's Chromium

Microsoft Guts Edge, Adds Chromium to Save Failing Browser

Microsoft has committed to still advancing web standards, and bringing the current advantages from Edge over to Chromium, such as the accessibility and security features. "We also expect this work to enable us to bring Microsoft Edge to other platforms like macOS". By incorporating Google's Chromium into Edge on the desktop, along with other sweeping changes being announced today, the company aims to improve its browser in a way that wasn't feasible before.

The PC giant said the move will allow for more frequent updates to be made and opens it up to broadening Edge beyond Windows 10, making it available on Mac, as well as previous versions of Windows including Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Google is the most prominent user of the Chromium open source code, which is the base of the Chrome browser.

Due to their lack of momentum since the release of Windows 10, the company is announcing a significant change today, they are building a new browser that is based on Chromium.

If you're the type who likes to get eyes on beta versions of software before it hits the masses, there's also an Insider Program for the Edge browser.

A preview build of the new Chromium-powered Edge browser will arrive early next year.

Microsoft later confirmed that it is dropping the Internet Explorer brand for Edge when it launched Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge Chromium rumor just confirmed

"Ultimately, we want to make the web experience better for many different audiences", stated Joe Belfiore, the Corporate Vice President for Windows, in a blog post. However, we believe that everything that makes Edge unique, such as its focus on inking, providing an excellent reading and PDF experience, will still be there in the new Edge.

The "new" browser will still be called Edge, and will still use the blue E but that's about all that's left from the old Edge. For any web browser to have a chance at competing, it needs to be available in as many places as possible. Up until now, Google has been the only major player contributing code to the Chromium project, but now Microsoft is in the game and is ready to commit code to improve Chromium. So, Microsoft is getting rid of its browser's EdgeHTML rendering and Chakra Javascript engines, and replacing them with Blink and V8, the key components of Chromium.

For the end users, the switch is vital as it will help Microsoft Edge address the ongoing compatibility issues with a large number of websites. Of course, the new Edge will still tie into your Microsoft account and sync your passwords, bookmarks, and other data across devices.

"If you're a Microsoft Edge customer, there is nothing you need to do as the Microsoft Edge you use today isn't changing".

Once this transition happens, Chrome extensions and applications will run on Edge without much or any tweaking, so developers will have an easier time porting content over to Edge.

Despite being the built-in browser on Windows 10, which is installed on around 700 million active devices, Edge owns just a tiny fraction of the desktop browsing market.
