Former Major League Baseball players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in a auto accident on Thursday night, according to multiple reports.

The two were teammates for Lara, which played at Caracas on Thursday night.

Third baseman Carlos Rivero was in the auto and survived, according to the website beisbolplay.

Castillo played from 2004 to 2008 in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Astros.

"We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo have died in a auto accident", Major League Baseball said in a tweet. Conflicting reports indicated the auto they were in either hit a rock or swerved to avoid a rock before going off the road. He recorded a.254 batting average, 39 homes runs and 218 career RBIs. He was traded to the Astros ahead of the 2015 season and rotated through other teams before his release from the Angels this August.

Valbuena hit.226 with 114 home runs over 11 big league seasons with the Angels, Seattle, Cleveland, the Chicago Cubs and Houston.

He played mostly second base and third base. Carlos Rivero, who played briefly for the Diamondbacks in 2014 was driving the vehicle, but he survived the accident.
