Lone Wisconsin Republican Who Opposed Stealing Democrats’ Power Explains Why

The Wisconsin Senate has narrowly rejected a bill that would have created a state guarantee that people with pre-existing conditions can have access to health insurance.

Walker is getting bipartisan pressure to veto the measures, including from Democratic Gov. -elect Tony Evers.

Sen. Steve Bieda, a Warren Democrat, said Republicans "refuse to accept the consequences of the election", criticizing what he said would be a "bogus" panel.

The bills give the Republican legislature control of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation board, which for eight years has been the duty of Walker.

In a statement, Evers said: "Wisconsin has never seen anything like this". They also moved to give lawmakers authority to stand up for GOP-backed laws if they think the incoming Democratic governor and attorney general are not adequately defending the state's interests.

On the heels of significant Democratic midterm victories in MI and Wisconsin, the Republican-controlled legislatures in both states have advanced plans to limit the authority of the states' newly elected governors. He says a handful of people desperately want to "cling to power".

Michigan Republicans, succeeding the strategies of conservative lawmakers in Wisconsin, marched ahead to commence restricting the power of the approaching Democratic secretary of state and ready the stage for supplementary restraint on the Democrats who will succeed as the governor and attorney general in January. The Assembly approved it on a 56-27 vote about two hours later, with a single Republican defecting. But the new legislation would add another party to the discussion: the legislature, which would essentially be given veto power over Kaul and likely keep the state in the suit. But Democrats and proponents of the redistricting law say the incoming Democratic secretary of state is perfectly capable of implementing it without intrusion from the GOP-controlled Legislature.

The measure was approved on a 17-16 vote with all Democrats and one Republican voting against it. The new law, if signed by Gov. Rick Snyder, would allow the legislature to intervene and potentially protect their actions in the attorney general's stead. "If you vote for this, shame on you. You will go down in history as a disgrace".

"Maybe we made some mistakes giving too much power to Gov. To me, it's about the institution".

The attorney general's office could also be weakened by a proposal to require a legislative committee, rather than the attorney general, to sign off on withdrawing from federal lawsuits. That move is created to block Democratic Gov. -elect Tony Evers from allowing the incoming attorney general, Democrat Josh Kaul, to withdraw Wisconsin from a multistate lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act. The Trump administration in October granted Walker's request for a waiver that would allow the state to enact the controversial policy, which Evers opposes and recently told reporters he might seek to unwind using his executive power.

One of the new measures would limit early voting to a period of two weeks, a substantial cut for places like Milwaukee, where Democrats have a significant advantage over Republicans. They made opposition to that lawsuit a central part of both of their campaigns.

As part of the package passed early Wednesday morning, Republicans codified work requirements for some Medicaid recipients.

Democrats countered that the legislation is an unconstitutional overreach.
