CS:GO now Free-to-Play, adds Danger Zone battle royale mode

Now that it’s free-to-play, CS:GO’s player count is rocketing

In an adjustment acknowledging the situation, Valve's latest rework of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive adds both elements to the game that originally launched in 2012 and a series that has been running since CS launched as a Half-Life mod 19 years ago.

Players who already own the game will be given "Prime Status" that comes with special perks such as souvenir items, item drops, and weapons cases. However, since Danger Zone players can have up to 120HP, they may survive encounters that would otherwise be deadly.

Introducing Danger Zone - a fast-paced battle royale game mode built on the tactical gameplay of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive where players use their wits, skill, and resources to fight to the finish.

Not only did Valve, the parent company behind CS:GO, confirm the creation of battle royale game "Danger Zone", but the company announced that CS:GO - the entire game and all modes - is now free.

A hot potato: Battle royale is by far the most defining game mode of the year, and Valve is looking capture back some of the audience that Epic Games has taken away. Carry a hostage to the rescue zone to earn a cash bonus. Players can queue into the mode as solo players, or in squads of two or three players. A Danger Zone match typically lasts about 10 minutes.

In their official announcement, Valve states that the full CS:GO experience is now free to all players, including all game modes, maps, matchmaking, and select item drops.

Unlike most battle royale titles, this mode will feature just 18 players (16 players for Solos), but will still feature the same concept of a constantly shrinking zone that players will need to navigate around. "Lab Rats (available by earning XP while playing Danger Zone matches) and the new Danger Zone case".

Prime Status is CS:GO's premium tier that ordinarily costs an additional $15.
