Cardinals strike gold, get Goldschmidt from Diamondbacks

Bowden Grading the Paul Goldschmidt trade for the Diamondbacks and Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks, the teams announced on Wednesday.

St. Louis will send right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, infielder Andy Young and a 2019 Competitive Balance Round B draft pick to Arizona in the deal. He is a three-time Gold Glove victor and four-time Silver Slugger during his eight-year Major League Baseball career.

Goldschmidt is slated to earn $14.5 next season, as well as a $1 million bonus for the trade. He slashed.290/.389/.533 in 2018, hitting 33 home runs and driving in 83 runs.

St. Louis went 88-74 last season and felt it needed a boost in the middle of a lineup that includes Matt Carpenter, Marcell Ozuna and Yadier Molina to compete with the likes of Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

He has compiled a career.297 batting average, 209 home runs, and 710 RBI.

"I would like to personally thank Paul Goldschmidt for everything he did as a D-back", said D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Mike Hazen. This is strictly a rental for the Cardinals, but the two sides could work out a contract extension before he reaches free agency following the 2019 season. After going 7-2 with a 3.88 ERA, Weaver followed that up with a record of 7-11 and an ERA of 4.95. Greinke came to the Dback after three seasons with the Dodgers.
