Arjen Robben to leave Bayern Munich at end of season

Netherlands and Bayern Munich legend Arjen Robben has announced that he will leave the club after the end of the current season.

Robben's crowning glory in a Bayern shirt came when he scored an 89th-minute victor to down domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 2012-13 Champions League final, a year after they lost a penalty shoot-out against Chelsea on home turf in the 2012 showpiece.

Robben has scored 98 Bundesliga goals in 198 appearances, but the 34-year old has looked past his best in the past few months.

"I can say that this is my a year ago and it is good like that", said Robben. I have taken the decision, personally, that this will be my past year.

"I think this is the right thing to do and to make it known now. It is the end of a very good and long period", the winger said.

"I may move on. I won't stop completely yet". He surely will not move during the upcoming January transfer window, opting for a summer move.

"This is my past year at Bayern". During his global career, Robben and the Oranje lost the 2010 World Cup Final to Spain and came in third in the 2014 edition of the tournament behind Lionel Messi's Argentina and Philip Lahm's Germany.

Speaking earlier on Sunday, Bayern president Uli Hoeness suggested that it would be the last season for Robben and fellow veteran winger Franck Ribery, whose contract also expires next June.

Bayern Munich's loyal army of fans had to endure watching their much-loved club suffering shocking results such as a 2-0 away defeat by Hertha Berlin and a disastrous 0-3 home thrashing by Borussia Monchengladbach. Father time is undefeated, and for Robben it is now time to ride off into the sunset.
